Part A – Reflection

I have enjoyed writing our own songs and coming up with our own ideas. I have also enjoyed recording our piece and adding in different bits to make our performance even better.

From this experience I will continue to write songs and perform. I sometimes found coming up with our own ideas for original songs challenging but once i got started it was easier.

Part D: Skill Share

I’ll  be teaching the basics of singing because it is one of my personal strengths in music. I’ll be teaching a simple warm up and a song.

Here is a breakdown:

Warm up,

In the warm up we will do lip trills.

  1. relax your lips and blow air through them
  2. add some tone
  3. Lastly you have to go up the scale starting with low pitch and ending on a high pitch.

Now for the song,

The song I will be teaching to you will be Valerie by Amy Winehouse. this song uses different tones and is relatively easy.

Here is a video of my skill share:

Here is a video of me evaluating how my skill share went:

Note from Advisor, Kerry Nixon “This lesson and evaluation was shared with classmates and received very good feedback.”

Part C: Arts Inspiration

I have chosen Ariana Grande as my inspirational artist. I love Ariana because I think she empowers young women with her music, i think that she puts a lot into her music. i love that she can go from having a low pitch to an extremely high pitch in her songs. She has worked really hard to achieve her goals in life. She is a very popular artist and has composed songs with artists such as jessie j, Nicki Minaj and many others.

Her real name is Ariana Grande-Butera but shortened her name for professional reasons. She was born on June 26th 1993. She began her career in the broadway musical 13, before landing a role on the show victorious as cat valentine in 2009. Since then she has had 6 albums.

Here is a video of my favourite Ariana grande song:

Part B: Slip by Stooshe

I choose this video because i like how it is set in a 1950 era and quite fun. The video uses bold and bright colours to make it exciting. I like this song because it is like an old motown record and the dance scenes relate to a girl group in the 60s. I also like the fact that its quite retro with where they set it in a diner/bowling alley, but also their clothes, hair and makeup.

I think the women in Stooshe are quite outgoing, strong and inspirational and this is shown in the video. They seem like they don’t take notice of other people, and don’t care about what other people think. I think the video is inspiring because it is a strong and confident performance that shows off all of their personal talents.

I think the video matches the song because the song is quite upbeat and the video is quirky and entertaining. At the end of the song a man slips this relates because the lyrics are talking about how someone messed up and was being arrogant and showing off.

Part A: Rehearsing for our performance

We have chosen two songs for our performance, one is an original composition called ‘Stay with me’ and ‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse.

I have learnt how to connect with the song and how to really interact with an audience.

It has helped me to enjoy performing more than I already did before we started the project.

‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse:

We decided to develop the cover song and see if we could add some harmonies.

‘Stay with me’ Original song:

We eventually decided to add harmonies to our cover of ‘Valerie’ here is a video of some harmony ideas:

Part A: Recording our original song

We started the process of recording our original song.

I found this process interesting and I learnt a lot about how to record a song live and all the different parts.

Here is a screenshot so far:

Part A: Writing a song

In my group we decided to try to write a song.

I was the lead singer accompanied by piano and bass guitar.

We found a chord progression on the piano first which we all liked, then added a base line.

I sang some melody ideas over the top.

Here is a video of what we came up with:

We decided that this section of the song should be the chorus and we practised the melody in a loop.

Now we had to think of some lyrics, we decided that the song should be happy and uplifting and we bounced ideas around and eventually decided to go with the lyrics

‘Don’t you know loves the key’

Here is a video of us practising with those lyrics:
